The Pygoplites diacanthus, commonly known as the Regal Angelfish, is one of the most breathtaking marine fish, admired for its striking coloration and elegant presence. Found in tropical reefs across the Indo-Pacific and the Red Sea, this species features a stunning combination of alternating vertical yellow and blue-white stripes, with vibrant blue edging on its fins.
The Regal Angelfish is a delicate species that requires a well-established aquarium with pristine water conditions. It thrives in large tanks (at least 100 gallons/380 liters) with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. While it is generally peaceful, it can be shy and should not be housed with overly aggressive tankmates.
Due to its natural diet, which consists of sponges and tunicates, this species can be challenging to acclimate to captive diets. Offering a variety of foods such as marine sponge-based preparations, high-quality frozen foods, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood is essential for its long-term health.
In reef aquariums, the Regal Angelfish is considered semi-reef-safe—some individuals may nip at corals, particularly soft corals and certain invertebrates, while others coexist without issue. Specimens from the Red Sea tend to be more hardy and adaptable to aquarium life compared to those from the Indo-Pacific.
✔ One of the most visually striking angelfish species
✔ Requires a mature, well-maintained aquarium with live rock
✔ Best suited for peaceful community tanks with non-aggressive fish
✔ Can be challenging to feed—requires sponge-based and high-quality marine foods
✔ Semi-reef-safe—may nip at corals and invertebrates
The Regal Angelfish is a true gem for experienced aquarists, offering unmatched beauty and elegance to any large marine aquarium.
