Acanthurus xanthopterus - Yellowfin Surgeonfish

Acanthurus xanthopterus, commonly known as the Yellowfin Surgeonfish or the Purple Surgeonfish, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Acanthuridae. They are typically found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral reefs and rocky areas.

These fish are known for their striking coloration, featuring a bright yellow dorsal and anal fin, which gives them their name "xanthopterus," meaning "yellow wing" in Greek. Their body is usually bluish-purple, with a distinctive horizontal yellow stripe running along their sides.

Yellowfin Surgeonfish are herbivores, feeding primarily on algae and other plant matter. They play an essential role in reef ecosystems by helping to control algae growth, which can otherwise smother coral reefs if left unchecked.

In the aquarium trade, Yellowfin Surgeonfish are occasionally sought after for their vibrant colors and interesting behavior. However, they require a large tank with plenty of swimming space and a well-established algae growth for grazing.

Like other surgeonfish, they possess a sharp spine near their tail, which they can use defensively if threatened. However, they are generally peaceful towards other fish species in the reef community.
