Ctenochaetus marginatus - Goldring Surgeonfish (M).
Ctenochaetus marginatus, commonly known as the Marginate Surgeonfish or the Goldring Surgeonfish, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Acanthuridae. Like other surgeonfish, they are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral reefs and rocky areas.
These fish are known for their distinctive coloration and markings. They have a brownish to reddish-brown body with a prominent yellow to golden-yellow ring around their eyes, which gives them their common name "Goldring Surgeonfish." Additionally, they typically have a dark band along the margins of their dorsal and anal fins, hence the name "marginatus."
Marginate Surgeonfish are herbivores, feeding primarily on algae and other plant matter. They play a vital role in reef ecosystems by helping to control algae growth, which can otherwise smother coral reefs if left unchecked.
In the aquarium trade, Marginate Surgeonfish are occasionally sought after for their striking appearance and their ability to help manage algae growth in reef tanks. However, like other surgeonfish species, they require a large tank with plenty of swimming space and a well-established algae growth for grazing.
These fish are generally peaceful towards other fish species but may become territorial, especially towards members of their own species or similar-looking fish. They also possess a sharp spine near their tail, which they can use defensively if threatened. Therefore, caution should be exercised when handling or housing them.
